BOK76 History in the making
(Hiphoppers to Headbangers)

The musical influences of the band started way back in their High School days. Before their interest in bands began, Owee and Elwynn originally were into hip-hop and dance music. They were part of the Def Rhyme mobile.

DEF RHYME
In 1992 during the time when mobile, dance mixes and rap was still very much in, five young high school freshmen from Claret School, Owee and Elwynn along with their barkada Ari, Jhong and Alvin formed the Def Rhyme mobile. With only one old turntable, a used amplifier, a stereo and a brand new mixer, they started mixing dance music songs. The first original record they bought was 'Just Another Day' by Jon Secada. But because of funding problems, they were having difficulty buying new records and equipment. It was only at this time DJ Matt (or DJ Abnoy) joined, when the mobile finally began to progress. With the excellent mixing abilities of DJ Matt they started mixing and recording songs. Among the mobile's famous songs was their remix version of 'Endless Love', 'Stars', and 'Friends'. The mobile also had a couple of party gigs like the birthday of Ari's sister where the mobile had to rent additional lighting equipment. After several months, the mobile began to experience internal and financial problems and it was because of this that DJ Matt left the mobile. The barkada still tried to continue the mobile with what they had. In 1993, they merge mobile with schoolmate 'Kutot-Amoy-Kamot' and did their last gig at the Ateneo-St. Paul Pasig interaction. But by this time the band fever had already started and they eventually got tired of the mobile business and wanted to try something new.

During their sophomore year in high school Owee and Elwynn joined the Phi Beta Kappa and that's where they met Don, who at that time was the only one who can play the guitar well. It was at this time when band fever had hit the country. In the summer of '94, Don and Elwynn formed the Guico Band together with their Bro Roy 'Bagwis' Asuncion and the owner of all the equipment, R.G. Guico which lasted only that summer. It was also at this time that their childhood friend Erwin, just beginning his interests in bands, started jamming with Owee and Elwynn in their homes. By their junior year, Don had already formally formed the band, Acid Radio and while in Tugegarao, Erwin met Harold and formed the band Bleach. In summer of '95, Owee joined his brother's group A.N.I.M.

ACID RADIO
Acid Radio was formally formed when Kulto ni Cesar guitarist, Andro 'tuts' Fernandez joined the remaining members of the band, Excessive Masturbation, Haj, J.V. and Don. Taken from White Zombie's 'Black Sunshine' , the group called themselves Acid Radio, with Don on Vocals. Soon, Roach Hemp's guitarist, Jomar Tongson also joined the band. The band was based on White Zombie, Ugly Kid Joe, Helmet, Weezer, and Pantera covers and played 'Thunderkiss 65' at every gig. They had a lot of hit songs like the original ultimate chick song 'Okey lang', their crowd pleaser song, 'Happy Song', and of course, the trash metal suicidal song 'Death Wish'. They also had others song like 'War Machine', 'No', 'Sabog ka na naman', 'Tanga', 'Crown of Thorns', 'What's Behind that Crooked Smile', 'Hoy', 'Jolug Blues' and many others. The band played in Fairs, Poveda Parties, Xavier Concerts, debuts and at Branigans. They also won the Battle of the Bands at Philippine Science in 1996 and was also featured in the first episode of 'Gimik', which was the last time that they played with Jomar, who concentrated on something else. JV, the drummer also had his last gig with Acid Radio on Rholette's Debut Party and was not seen anymore after that. Due to this, the band, with no drummer, just concentrated on other things and has unofficially disbanded.

BLEACH
The band started out in 1993 when a former band-mate Carlo offered Win to form a band with him. The band then started to look for other ingredients for the completion of its recipe. The first job was to find a lead guitarist, luckily Harold came up and what's best is that he was really good at it. The drummer part was quite hard as always but he came in the nick of time before the first gig was. Thus the ARCH ANGELS were born, with Harold on lead, Carlo bass, Aris on drums and Win on vocals. The following years saw the entrance and exit of different bandmembers. Their name also evolve from DEAD MALICE and finally to BLEACH. Their gigs included school concerts, fairs, and joining contest. But their most memorable gig was the San Miguel Beer battle of the bands, where they won Second Place in the Regional division with their song 'Let Me Grow'. Unfortunately the bandmembers broke up after high school graduation.

A.N.I.M.
In the summer of 95, Owee was invited by his brother Arvin who's on the keyboards, to play bass guitar for their upcoming showband, which they called A.N.I.M. (Anak Ng Ina Mo). With Paolo on vocals, Alfred on lead guitars, Wilbert on drums and Ariel on rhythm guitars, they started doing cover of Pop, Jazz, R&B artists. Among their favorite songs were 'Sweet Baby', 'Am I the same girl?', 'Head over Heals', 'Celebration' and 'You Gotta Be' just to name a few. In the following year, they had a new vocalist in the person of Jan Marie. They also changed their name a couple of times. They had a few successful gigs at Ariel's birthday party, a De La Salle show and Owee's birthday party. But because of internal problems, guitarist Alfred left the band. They had their last gig at Ariel's birthday in June, 1997.

During their senior year, the barkada of Don, Owee and Elwynn with Jhong(uaphing) on bass formed THE GIX BAND.

THE GIX BAND
In June 1995, what started of as just being a guestband at a party, the barkada of Owee, Elwynn, Don and Jhong decided to form a band. With Owee on rhythm guitars, Jhong on bass, Elwynn on drums and Don on lead guitars and vocals they proudly called themselves THE GIX BAND (named after the person who makes all the kapa and tono). They then started to play cover songs ranging from conio alternative to jolug alternative. The first studio they ever-jammed on was the one beside CDSL where the walls are made up of egg containers, the amps are Roto and the guitars are just pasadya. But because Don and Owee had other bands at that time, ACID RADIO and A.N.I.M. respectively, the band was not able to jam too often. They finally had their first major gig at Owee's 17th birthday party. With only limited equipment (bulok na Roto drums ni Luke), they played cover songs like 'Undone Sweater Song', 'With or without you', 'Geek' (altered lyrics of Creep), 'Lakas-Tama', 'Okey Lang', 'With a Smile' (with TyoPanghe on vocals) and their hit song 'B.K. Blues'. Other gigs followed, which were all acoustics (wala kasi silang gamit) like the program at their club in school where Don sang 'Cloudy Skies' by Ugly Kid Joe. The band's last and most memorable gig was at the Paalam Program before their graduation where they played in front of the their entire batch their version of the song 'Himig Natin' by Juan dela Cruz band. After high school graduation bandmember Jhong went solo (with syota) and eventually the band was forgotten.

After high school graduation and after their bands, Bleach and THE GIX BAND, disbanded, Erwin, Owee and Elwynn began writing original compositions. Their first hit-ever was 'MAYAM' written by Erwin and Owee. Don was the one who added the lead and bass guitars. Soon other compositions followed like 'Image', 'Behind', 'The Damned', and 'Revelation'. They also revived and improvised songs from their former bands like 'Because of You', 'I-ME', and 'Sometimes'. They even passed a demo tape at a local radio station in Tuguegarao where it was sadly rejected due to bad taste of the producers (they said that the band sounded glamrockish).

In July 1996, defunct Bleach guitarist Harold Pre went to Manila joined the band. Now with Elwynn on drums, Don on backing vocals and rhythm guitars, Owee on bass and Erwin on vocals, they called themselves a variety of names ranging from Schitz, Sharivary, and Hitch. They played several songs including the original version of 'Let Me Grow'. But only a few weeks of jamming and before they can even record their songs, Harold had to leave for P.M.A. and left the band.

The quartet still tried to continue the band, this time with Don on lead and Elwynn on rhythm guitars. In March 1997, they were first scheduled to play at Rholette's debut party where Owee played as session bassist for Don's band Acid Radio. But because of a band named NO NAME BAND, they were not able to play. The following month, they finally had a chance to play at Cheryl's debut party where they performed the acoustic version of 'All I want' by Toad the Wet Sprocket and 'MAYAM'.

In the later part of 1997, Don's band Acid Radio had informally split-up and he was invited to play for the Hardcore, Korn-based, band Soma. They had several gigs at Club Dredd, Yosh and Freedom Bar. But because of academic problems and because 'Bobo ang drummer nila, sabi ng guitarista', they broke up. In December 1997, the group of Erwin, Elwynn, Owee and Don composed the song 'You came my way'. In early 1998, Don joined the jazz based group Pillow Talk together with Acid Radio guitarist and now bassist Andro. But because of internal and managerial problems, the band disbanded before they were even scheduled to play.

Don was then able to concentrate on their band with Erwin, Elwynn and Owee. They continued composing and improving their songs. But because they did not have a regular drummer they were not able to perform in any clubs. Finally, after a several months of lay-off, the band found a drummer in the person of Tonio Bustos, Erwin's former classmate in UST before he was debarred.

ERWIN'S UST DAYS

The band was then scheduled to play at their first gig, Club Dredd and they needed a name. Elwynn then thought of BOK76 (pronounced as Bhowk seventy-six) which is derived from their high school fraternity.

From their first gig at Club Dredd, their songs like 'Behind' instantly became a hit in the underground scene. Other gigs and invitations followed. They were able to play at Yosh Café were the audience sang with Dishwalla's 'Counting Blue Cars', a couple of more times at Club Dredd and more debuts and parties. One of the most memorable parties was at Mahlou's ("Hindi na ako natutuwa sa inyo!!!") Debut Party where they came in late, without a drummer, and played two acoustic songs, which included their own version of 'Push'.

Unfortunately, due to lack of professionalism (natutulog sa bahay kapag may jamming), the band had to kick their old drummer out. But after a successful gig at the variety show of Miriam College, they decided to include Leash and ex-Soma drummer, Jerome Ocampo (yun bobo ang drummer daw pero hindi naman). With the additional of Jerome in the percussion, the band's music has risen to a new height. At the moment the band is concentrating on recording their songs so it could be finally released and performing for several bars.

What does the future hold for these fab five? Multi-platinum award? An N.U. 107 Rock Award? A major concert? A Grammy Award? The next Beatles? (tama na masyado na akong nangangarap) But whatever it is one thing is for sure these guys will continue to give you the best kind of musical experience you are looking for.
